The Wednesday Sisters eBook edition

The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Clayton is as close to a perfect beach read as you can get.

It is a rare book that has one smart, engaging and has a well rounded and believable woman character.  Never mind five of them!  This is the story of five women living conventional lives in unconventional times.

From a purely technical point of view, Clayton has pulled off an impressive feat.  She manages to make each one of these five women real and full character who all get equal time and equal voice.

The story starts with the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and traces these women's lives through roughly 10 years.  Those ten years include the Apollo space flights and burning bras; peace marches and Miss America contests, the birth of modern Silicon Valley and the first New York Marathon.

The story is about women and friendship.  As the world around them changes these women are busy building relationships with each other and with books.

In a broad sense It is about family.  The ones we come from and the ones we create.  It is about the frailty and fortitude.  It is about awaking, change and growth.

It is also laugh out loud funny and tear-jerkingly sad.  I mean really, how can you resist a book that starts out:

"That's us, there in the photograph. Yes, that's me-in one of my chubbier phases, though I suppose one of these days I'll have to face up to the fact that it's the thinner me that's the "phase," not the chubbier one. And going left to right, that's Linda (her hair loose and combed, but then she brought the camera, she was the only one who knew we'd be taking a photograph). Next to her is Ally, pale as ever, and then Kath. And the one in the white gloves in front-the one in the coffin-that's Brett."

I was hooked from the first paragraph.

So grab your suntan lotion, your favorite drink and a bag of chips, sit in your favorite lounge chair and prepare to enjoy!

Here's the publishers synopsis:

Friendship, loyalty, and love lie at the heart of Meg Waite Clayton’s beautifully written, poignant, and sweeping novel of five women who, over the course of four decades, come to redefine what it means to be family.
For thirty-five years, Frankie, Linda, Kath, Brett, and Ally have met every Wednesday at the park near their homes in Palo Alto, California. Defined when they first meet by what their husbands do, the young homemakers and mothers are far removed from the Summer of Love that has enveloped most of the Bay Area in 1967.
These “Wednesday Sisters” seem to have little in common: Frankie is a timid transplant from Chicago, brutally blunt Linda is a remarkable athlete, Kath is a Kentucky debutante, quiet Ally has a secret, and quirky, ultra-intelligent Brett wears little white gloves with her miniskirts. But they are bonded by a shared love of both literature–Fitzgerald, Eliot, Austen, du Maurier, Plath, and Dickens–and the Miss America Pageant, which they watch together every year.
As the years roll on and their children grow, the quintet forms a writers circle to express their hopes and dreams through poems, stories, and, eventually, books. Along the way, they experience history in the making: Vietnam, the race for the moon, and a women’s movement that challenges everything they have ever thought about themselves, while at the same time supporting one another through changes in their personal lives brought on by infidelity, longing, illness, failure, and success.
Humorous and moving, The Wednesday Sisters is a literary feast for book lovers that earns a place among those popular works that honor the joyful, mysterious, unbreakable bonds between friends.

Fighting For Different Reason's

picalttag

'ICEMAN: My Fighting Life' by Chuck Liddell. Chuck is not only one of the greatest fighters ever to step into the octagon, he is down to earth, a good father, and a loyal friend to those who know, work and train with him. One of his most intriguing fights he talks about in detail that I was amazed by his courage and toughness was the Vale Tudo Championships in Brazil. Chuck's only second career fight and he beats a heavily favored veteran fighter in his own back yard. I find myself thinking of Chuck's life and the decisions he made and it provides a calming influence to me as I now understand that life can only beat you up if you let it. I enjoyed this eBook, and recommend it to any new fan of the mixed martial arts sport.

'How Soccer Explains the World' by Franklin Foer. Each of the chapters tells a different story about soccer within a different area of the world. Our sports have Holly Hobby characters by comparison. The rivalry between the two Glasgow teams, the Protestant Rangers and the Catholic Celtic, is unlike anything that we have in this nation. This is one of the most perceptive descriptions of globalization's impacts, both positive and negative, that I have read. The book is full of animated reporting, strong characters and insightful analysis. If you are a soccer enthusiast you will absolutely love this book, but even if you don't understand the first thing about this game, the book will offer an entertaining reading material that will probably bring you closer to game and could help you understand your friends' and neighbors' passion around the world. Iceman: My Fighting Life eBook edition by Liddell, Chuck
"When I walk out of the tunnel, I can see the lights, hear the music, feel the crowd, but it all begins to close off as I near the cage. By that point I'm thinking, I've been training hard, it's time to focus....Every man is born with a fight-or-flight instinct, and mine is to fight. It always has been."

Poker, Horses, It's All A Gamble

picalttag

'Confessions of a Video Poker Winner' by Greg Perry. When I heard that this book's writer mocked the French, I KNEW it had to be a great book! I wasn't disappointed!! Finally, a gambling writer that isn't stoic, who has some humor, but also adds PRACTICAL ADVICE for us lonely Video Poker players! I never knew how to take all the different casino comp offers and modify my playing strategies and locations based on those different comps. Although I'll probably never play in Kansas City, for example, his Kansas City chapter gave me GREAT INSIGHT into how to adjust to the various rules of whatever casinos I DO play at. Very readable, a LOT of funny material, all related to Video Poker (except for a slight detour in one chapter where he discusses the evening he and his wife gambled with William Shatner.)

'On The Fence' by Janet Barrett. This book starts with the one's child saying, "Mom, I want to ride a horse! Overwhelmed by fears of what you do not know and the expense of an activity you are afraid your child will give up too quickly (or not quickly enough), this book addresses all the questions parents face as they face them. Very easy to read and nicely laid out. I would recommend it highly to any parent who hears those words for the first time: "Mom, I want to ride a horse!" Fun, Entertaining, And Meaningful

picalttag

'Sweet Season' by Austin Murphy. This was an excellent read! Not only was it a refreshing take on true student athletes today, the author spoke beautifully on reconnecting with his family and his spiritual sense of purpose. This is not only for sports fans, but for all of us who have wanted to drop our jobs and get "away" from it all. This is an exceptional book from an exceptional author.

'Happy Birthday or Whatever' by Annie Choi. I don't usually go for the memoir stuff, or the biographies, or the personal histories. But the humor, entertainment value, and overall charm of this book made it a must-read after the first few pages. In fact, just read the first couple of pages' description of the author's ultimate fantasy birthday party and you will know you're in for a good time... and it just gets better. The refreshing part is, the author doesn't have good stories about her life because she was beaten as a child, burned by cigarettes, or migrated between halfway homes and prison. She led, by many accounts, a reasonably normal life. This book is a joy to read. It is side splitting funny, and not dull for one second. Fight And Fishing, Who Would Have Thought?

picalttag

'The Last Great Fight' by Joe Layden. I am not a fan of boxing, but I do love a good story, and this eBook delivers, big time. The author crafts this tale of two men using the historic 1990 championship fight between Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas as not only the pivotal point in their lives, but also, as the title suggests, as the end of boxing in popular consciousness. I highly, highly recommended for boxing fans and for others who, like me, simply love a rich, engrossing story.

'Fishing On The Edge' by Several…Mike Iaconelli, Brian Kamenetzky, Andrew Kamenetzky. I found this eBook to be quite informative about the unexpectedly interesting sport of professional bass angling. The book is primarily about his journey from fun fisher to world champion professional angler. As it turns out, this backstage tour of a sport takes you through many hard times, uncertainty, emotions, personal growth, and (of course) gossip. This is not a bass fishing how-to guide, rather an entertaining behind the scenes look into the life of bass fishing's most electric star. Ike is the driving force behind bass fishing's surge into the mainstream and this well-written account of Ike's rise to stardom tells his story in a witty and readable style. The Last Great Fight : The Extraordinary Tale of Two Men and How One Fight Changed Their Lives Forever (Mobipocket) eBook edition by Layden, Joe
It is considered by many to be the biggest upset in the history of boxing: James "Buster" Douglas knocked out then-undefeated Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson in the 10th round in 1990 when the dominating and intimidating Tyson was considered invincible. THE LAST GREAT FIGHT takes readers not only behind the scenes of this epic battle, but inside the lives of two men, their ambitions, their dreams, the downfall of one and the rise of another.

FISHING ON THE EDGE eBook edition by IACONELLI, MIKE, KAMENETZKY, BRIAN, KAMENETZKY, ANDREW
Who would have thought that going fishing for bass would make a big time sport. Big enough that ESPN would buy the national organization and use their promotional power to make it even bigger. And with prizes in the $100,000 range, it isn't up to basketball or the other huge sports, but it certainly isn't just peanuts any more.

Traveling Is NO Game

picalttag

'Sudoku Puzzles' by Ellen Square. I bought this eBook for my friend, who is a teenager. Since in the past, she told me she once bought a puzzle book but it was too difficult for her, I guess she would like this eBook. To my expectation, she loves this eBook. After she learned the two basic techniques in the introduction part, she now can solve the puzzles in this book without a pen, paper & eraser, since this is an eBook. She still finds it fun because it takes time to find the exact cell that can be fixed to one specific value. She told me it is a good book for teenagers. I enjoy this game for when I travel. It's a great way to tune out your travel buddies especially if you're on a long Trip!

Kinky Rodney... No silly, not like THAT!

picalttag

'SCUSE ME WHILE I WHIP THIS OUT' is a collection of some of Friedman's previous published pieces, as well as some never before released material. His writing covers subjects from country music to politics to life in general. Like a great Texas barbeque, there is a little something on the plate for everyone to enjoy. I would not offer to share this with my reading buddies or even mention I own it, but the book certainly provides a unique portrayal of the life of Kinky. 'Coming Clean' by Rodney Carrington The artistry of this book is that it takes commentary and stories from Rodney's routines and puts it all on paper so skillfully that you can actually hear Rodney speaking as you are reading, and it sounds great. He is so funny, you won't care if you haven't heard his routines. If you have never heard Rodney, then you will want to read this ebook!

'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out eBook edition by Friedman, Kinky
Kinky Friedman is back, and with 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out he gets it on with all manner of egos. In this collection of twisted takes on life, the Kinkster gives us funny, irreverent, and insightful looks at outsized personalities from people he's known, like Bill Clinton, George W., Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan -- not to mention Joseph Heller and Don Imus -- to people he's known in spirit, such as Moses, Jesus, Jack Ruby, and Hank Williams. With his meditations on subjects ranging from sleeping at the White House, marriage, his pets, fishing in Borneo, country music, and cigars to the tribulations of possessing talent, Kinky doesn't deny us the "flashes of brilliance and laugh-out-loud observations" (Rocky Mountain News) that are present in all his other work.

Coming Clean eBook edition by Carrington, Rodney
Rodney Carrington is living proof that while you can take the boy out of Texas, you can't take Texas out of the boy. In his first book, COMING CLEAN, he serves up a hearty serving of the down home humor that fuels his sold out comedy shows and chart topping albums. Letting his "inappropriately real" self shine through, Rodney shares his everyman wisdom (or lack thereof) about the stuff of everyday life, including: Every Dumb Thing Men Do Begins with Alcohol, Man Shopping, and I Like My Women Like I Like My Chicken. His insights on childrearing, making relationships work, and eating cat food will resonate with all the average Joes out there in the heartland, and the women who love them.

Whether you're traveling the world or just ready to see it through new eyes, this weeks selections give a humorous and informative look at life, travel, and how Not to become Oprah's book of the month.

NOT THAT YOU ASKED
by Almond, Steve

"Dear Oprah Winfrey,

I am writing to inform you that I cannot accept your kind offer to name this book as your October, 2007 selection for Oprah's Book Club™. I realize this letter may come as something of a shock, given my reputation for shameless self-promotion, which I hope precedes me ... The truth is, I don't give a shit how many books you sell. I don't care how much dough you give away, or how many famous people you make cry. At the end of the day, you're a TV star. You show up on a tiny screen and give lonely people a place to park their emotions for an hour. You're the world's leading retailer of inspiration. You're the Wal-Mart of Hope."

A celebration of the character and style of one of the world's most spectacular cities! This vibrant insider's view of the most mature city on earth is the perfect companion for anyone who loves anything Italian. In 1995, after a twenty–year love affair with Italy, Alan Epstein fulfilled his dream to live in Rome. In As the Romans Do, he celebrates the spirit of this stylish, dramatic, ancient city that formed the hub of a far–flung empire and introduced the Mediterranean culture to the rest of the world. He also reveals today's Roman men and women in all their appealing contradictions: their gregarious caffe culture; inborn artistic flair; passionate appreciation of good food; instinctive mistrust of technology; showy sex appeal; ingrained charm and expressiveness; surprisingly unusual attitudes toward marriage and religion; and much, much more.
